Exam Structure

The SSC CGL examination consists of four tiers, each assessing different skills required for government roles:

  • Tier I (Preliminary Exam):

    • Type: Computer-Based Test (CBT)
    • Sections:
      • General Intelligence and Reasoning
      • General Awareness
      • Quantitative Aptitude
      • English Comprehension
    • Marks: 200 marks total (50 marks per section)
    • Duration: 1 hour
  • Tier II (Main Exam):

    • Type: Computer-Based Test (CBT)
    • Sections:
      • Paper I: Quantitative Abilities – 200 marks, 2 hours
      • Paper II: English Language and Comprehension – 200 marks, 2 hours
      • Paper III: Statistics – 200 marks, 2 hours (only for candidates applying for specific posts)

  • Tier III (Descriptive Paper):

    • Type: Offline exam (Pen and Paper mode)
    • Content: Essay, Precis, Letter, and Application Writing

    • Duration: 1 hour
    • Language: English/Hindi
  • Tier IV (Skill Test/Data Entry/Computer Proficiency):

    • Type: Skill Test or Document Verification
    • Required for specific posts:
      • DEST (Data Entry Skill Test) for Tax Assistant Posts
      • CPT (Computer Proficiency Test) for Assistant Section Officer

Eligibility Criteria

  • Nationality: Must be an Indian citizen or meet other nationality requirements as per SSC norms.

  • Educational Qualification:

    • General Requirement: Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university or equivalent.
    • Additional Requirements (for specific posts):
      • Junior Statistical Officer (JSO): Bachelor’s degree in any subject with at least 60% in Mathematics at 12th level OR Bachelor’s degree with Statistics as one of the subjects.
      • Assistant Audit Officer (AAO)/Assistant Accounts Officer (AAO): Desirable qualification is a Chartered Accountant or equivalent degree in Business Studies, though not mandatory.
  • Age Limit: Generally between 18–32 years (differs based on the specific post applied for). Age relaxations are available for SC/ST, OBC, PwD, and other reserved categories as per government rules.

Syllabus Overview

Tier I:

      • General Intelligence and Reasoning: Analogies, coding-decoding, puzzles, syllogisms, classification, matrix, directions, and visual memory.
      • General Awareness: Current affairs, static GK, history, geography, economy, polity, general science.
      • Quantitative Aptitude: Number system, simplification, interest, percentage, ratio and proportion, profit and loss, mensuration, time and work, and geometry.
      • English Comprehension: Grammar, vocabulary, synonyms, antonyms, comprehension, spotting errors, sentence improvement, cloze test, para jumbles.
    • Tier II:

      • Quantitative Abilities: Higher-level mathematics, including trigonometry, algebra, geometry, and data interpretation.
      • English Language and Comprehension: More complex grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and writing skills.
      • Statistics (for JSO): Probability, random variables, data interpretation, sampling theory, index numbers, and time series.
      • General Studies (Finance & Economics): Micro and macroeconomics, accounting principles, balance of payments, and other economic and financial principles.
    • Tier III: Writing tasks involving essays, applications, letters, and precis to test written communication skills.

    • Tier IV: Skill test for data entry (usually 8,000 key depressions per hour) or a computer proficiency test (typing and computer operation skills).

Selection Process

Step 1: Tier I Exam – Preliminary round where qualified candidates proceed to Tier II.

      • Step 2: Tier II Exam – A key qualifying exam that determines eligibility for Tier III and specific posts.
      • Step 3: Tier III Exam – Descriptive test that further assesses communication skills.
      • Step 4: Tier IV Exam – Skill test or document verification required for certain posts.
      • Final Selection: Based on cumulative performance in Tiers I, II, and III, with document verification for eligible candidates.

Important Dates

  • Notification Release: Generally released around December/January each year.
  • Application Period: Typically lasts for about a month after notification.
  • Exam Dates:
    • Tier I: Generally conducted between May and July.
    • Tier II, III, IV: Conducted in intervals after Tier I, typically a few months apart.
  • Result Declaration: SSC announces results for each tier a few weeks post-exam.
