The University Grants Commission (UGC) Exam typically refers to the UGC NET (National Eligibility Test), which is a national-level exam in India, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of the UGC. This exam determines the eligibility of candidates for the roles of Assistant Professor and Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in Indian universities and colleges.
Eligibility Criteria
a. Educational Qualification
- General Category: Candidates must have a master’s degree or equivalent in the concerned subject from a recognized university, with at least 55% aggregate marks.
- Reserved Categories (OBC, SC, ST, PWD): A minimum of 50% aggregate marks is required.
- Final Year Students: Those appearing in the final year of a master’s degree program can apply, provided they meet the qualification requirements when results are declared.
b. Age Limit
- There is no upper age limit for appearing in the SET exam for the Assistant Professor position.
Exam Structure
The SET exam consists of two papers, both conducted on the same day in two separate sessions:
a. Paper 1
- Purpose: To test general teaching/research aptitude and reasoning skills.
- Subjects Covered: General awareness, reasoning, comprehension, divergent thinking, and teaching/research aptitude.
- Total Questions: 50 questions
- Total Marks: 100
b. Paper 2
- Purpose: Subject-specific exam based on the candidate’s chosen subject.
- Total Questions: 100 questions
- Total Marks: 200
Subjects and Syllabus
Paper 1 Syllabus: Common for all candidates, focusing on:
- Teaching Aptitude: Understanding the nature and characteristics of teaching, evaluation systems, and learner characteristics.
- Research Aptitude: Research methodology, ethics, and communication skills.
- Reading Comprehension: Based on a given passage.
- Communication: Mass communication and interpersonal skills.
- Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation: Ability to analyze data and apply logic.
- ICT (Information and Communication Technology): Basic computer skills and digital awareness.
- People, Development, and Environment: Environmental issues, impact on society, and sustainable development.
- Higher Education System: Governance, administration, and policies in higher education in India.
Paper 2 Syllabus: This paper is based on the candidate’s chosen subject (e.g., History, Sociology, Political Science, Economics, Computer Science, etc.). The syllabus follows the postgraduate curriculum of the subject.

- The fee varies across states. Typically:
- General Category: ₹1000–₹1500
- OBC: ₹800–₹1000
- SC/ST/PWD: ₹500–₹750
Exam Dates
