The University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test (UGC NET) is a national-level exam in India conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Exam Dates

UGC NET Eligibility Criteria

a. Educational Qualification

  • General Category: Candidates must have a master’s degree or equivalent from a recognized university with at least 55% aggregate marks.
  • Reserved Categories (OBC, SC, ST, PWD): A minimum of 50% aggregate marks in their master’s degree.
  • Final Year Students: Candidates appearing in their final year of a master’s degree program are also eligible to apply, provided they fulfill the qualification requirements upon result declaration.

b. Age Limit

  • Junior Research Fellowship (JRF): The upper age limit is 31 years (with relaxation of up to 5 years for OBC, SC/ST, PWD, and women).
  • Assistant Professor: There is no upper age limit for the Assistant Professor post.

Subjects and Syllabus

  • Paper 1 Syllabus: Common for all candidates, focusing on:

    • Teaching Aptitude: Includes concepts related to teaching, learner characteristics, and evaluation systems.
    • Research Aptitude: Research methods, ethics, and communication.
    • Reading Comprehension: Based on a passage.
    • Communication: Interpersonal and mass communication basics.
    • Reasoning: Logical reasoning, data interpretation, and mathematical reasoning.
    • Information and Communication Technology (ICT): Basics of ICT, computer literacy.
    • People, Development, and Environment: Environmental issues, human and social impact, and sustainable development.
    • Higher Education System: Governance, administration, and policies in India.
  • Paper 2 Syllabus: Specific to the candidate’s chosen subject (e.g., Economics, English, Political Science, Sociology, Computer Science, Management, etc.). The syllabus is based on the subject’s postgraduate curriculum.

UGC NET Exam Structure

The UGC NET consists of two papers, both conducted in a single session without a break:

a. Paper 1

  • Purpose: To assess teaching/research aptitude.
  • Subjects Covered: General awareness, reasoning ability, comprehension, divergent thinking, and teaching/research aptitude.
  • Total Questions: 50 questions
  • Total Marks: 100
  • Duration: 1 hour

b. Paper 2

  • Purpose: Subject-specific assessment based on the candidate’s chosen subject (over 80 subjects available).
  • Total Questions: 100 questions
  • Total Marks: 200
  • Duration: 2 hours

Both papers consist of objective-type multiple-choice questions (MCQs). There is no negative marking.
