The IBPS Clerk Exam is conducted by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection to recruit clerical staff for public sector banks in India. It includes Preliminary and Main exams focused on reasoning, quantitative aptitude, English language, and general awareness.
Eligibility Criteria
• Educational Qualification:
A Bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognized university.
Proficiency in the official language of the State/UT for which the candidate is applying (reading, writing, and speaking).
Basic computer knowledge; candidates should have a certificate/diploma in computer operations, or computer skills should have been part of their curriculum in school or college.
• Age Limit:
20 to 28 years for general candidates. Age relaxation applies as per government rules: 5 years for SC/ST, 3 years for OBC, 10 years for PwBD, and others as specified
Exam Pattern
The IBPS Clerk exam is conducted in two phases: the Preliminary Exam and the Main Exam. There is no interview round for IBPS Clerk.
• Preliminary Exam:
Consists of three sections:
1. English Language: 30 questions, 30 marks, 20 minutes.
2. Numerical Ability: 35 questions, 35 marks, 20 minutes.
3. Reasoning Ability: 35 questions, 35 marks, 20 minutes.
Total Questions: 100
Total Marks: 100
Duration: 60 minutes.
Negative Marking: 0.25 marks deducted for each incorrect answer.
Qualifying in Nature: Candidates need to clear sectional and overall cut-offs to qualify for the Main Exam.
• Main Exam:
Consists of four sections:
1. General/Financial Awareness: 50 questions, 50 marks, 35 minutes.
2. General English: 40 questions, 40 marks, 35 minutes.
3. Reasoning Ability & Computer Aptitude: 50 questions, 60 marks, 45 minutes.
4. Quantitative Aptitude: 50 questions, 50 marks, 45 minutes.
Total Questions: 190
Total Marks: 200
Duration: 160 minutes.
Negative Marking: 0.25 marks deducted for each incorrect answer.

Syllabus
• English Language:
Reading Comprehension, Cloze Test, Error Detection, Sentence Correction, Fill in the Blanks, Synonyms and Antonyms, Sentence Rearrangement.
• Numerical Ability/Quantitative Aptitude:
Simplification, Number Series, Data Interpretation, Ratio and Proportion, Percentage, Profit and Loss, Simple and Compound Interest, Time and Distance, Mixture and Allegations, Time and Work, Probability, Mensuration.
• Reasoning Ability:
Puzzles, Seating Arrangement, Syllogism, Coding-Decoding, Inequality, Blood Relations, Alphanumeric Series, Order and Ranking, Data Sufficiency, Input-Output.
• Computer Aptitude (in Main Exam):
Basics of Computers, Software and Hardware, MS Office, Internet and Email, Keyboard Shortcuts, Operating Systems, Computer Networks, Security Tools, Viruses.
• General/Financial Awareness:
Current Affairs, Banking and Financial Awareness, Indian Economy, Banking Terms, Budget and Fiscal Policies, Banking History, Monetary Policy, Important Abbreviations, Financial Institutions (like RBI, IMF, World Bank, etc.).
Application Process
• Mode: Online through the official IBPS website.
• Application Fee:
General/OBC: ₹850
SC/ST/PwBD: ₹175
• Documents Required:
Scanned photograph, signature, left thumb impression, and a handwritten declaration. The handwritten declaration text should read: “I, [Your Name], hereby declare that all the information submitted by me in the application form is correct, true, and valid. I will present the supporting documents as and when required.”
Selection Process
• Preliminary Exam: Qualifying in nature; candidates need to clear sectional and overall cut-offs.
• Main Exam: Final selection is based on the scores in the Main Exam only. Scores from the Preliminary Exam are not considered in the final merit.
• Provisional Allotment: Based on the marks scored in the Main Exam, candidates are provisionally allotted to different banks depending on their preferences and available vacancies. Allotment is based on merit and reservation policies.
Important Dates
• Notification Release: Usually around August each year.
• Online Application: Generally opens shortly after notification release and lasts for 20–25 days.
• Preliminary Exam: Usually held in December.
• Main Exam: Usually in January/February.
• Result Declaration: Results for each stage are declared around a month after the exam.
